No other organization in the federal government uses as much energy as the Department of Defense. From running fuel convoys to building base infrastructure to deciding how to power everything from warships to wearable electronics, the DOD knows a forward-thinking energy strategy is critical to fulfilling mission objectives and saving lives. That’s why DOD has invested over $5 billion since 2009 in clean energy research, development, testing, demonstration, and procurement. Efforts have focused on alternative fuels, fuel efficiency, smart grid technologies, quickly deployable microgrids, renewable energy generation, and advanced batteries. And after supporting game-changing investments that resulted in the Internet, GPS, and the jet engine, there’s good reason to think the DOD’s innovation ecosystem will spur game-changing energy technologies as well.
